Enjoy Outdoor Activities in Spring

March 25, 2016 by Sharon Kunkel

Spring Cover 2016Don’t get your hopes up too far, but it’s looking like we may have turned the corner and nicer weather is making its way to Pittsford!!  We’re excited that temperatures are hitting that 60-degree mark just in time for Easter, and even if we see some snow next week, it won’t be long before it’s melted away!  Before we know it, things will be greening up & everyone will be ready to come out of winter hibernation!!

We’ve got some fun suggestions as your family starts to spend more time outside!

Visit the Farm

There’s nothing like getting out, smelling spring-time dirt & seeing all the just-born animals!  Visiting a farm is a fun activity for the whole family!  We love nearby Wickham Farms!!  This is opening week for them, and there is so much to do!!  You can grab an ice cream cone or play some mini-golf!  For the littlest kiddos, they have a train!  And of course, all the adorable animals you can stand; bring your quarters so you can feed them!! And, if you get there fast enough, there’s a bunny hunt starting today at noon!

They also have a great CSA program, if you are looking for a way to get your family to eat more fruits & vegetables!  They have a really flexible plan, that lets you select the produce that will work best for your family!

Visit Pittsford Farms Dairy and Bakery

ice-cream-690403_960_720Okay, technically, this is an indoor activity, but it’s only because you’ll want to grab some ice cream and then take a walk along the canal.

Puddle Jump

boots-987110_960_720We need those April showers to bring our May flowers, but what do you do when it’s been raining for days?  On a warmer spring day, don’t let the rain keep you in!  Have your family put on their rain boots & jackets, and go for a walk in the rain!  Let the kids hop, skip & jump through all the puddles they like!  Rainy days can still be fun & memorable!!  And the best part?  Coming inside and warming up with a mug of hot cocoa!!

Go Fly a Kite

Windy spring days were made for kite flying.  No matter your kid’s ages, flying kites is something anyone can enjoy!!  You can pick up an inexpensive one at many stores, but Hobby House Toys here in town is one of our favorite spots!  If you’ve got older children, investing a little more money into a stunt kite might be more exciting; it requires a little more skill & finesse!  Just find a wide open space on a breezy day and start soaring!!

What do you love doing in the Spring!?

We love Spring & all it brings!!  If you are thinking of buying or selling a home in Pittsford, now is a great time to get started!  The Spring real estate rush is here, and new homes for sale are popping up every day.   Let Pittsford’s Realtor, Christina Feck help you find the right fit for you & your family!

March 17, 2016 by Sharon Kunkel

Hey Pittsford,  are you as ready for Spring as we are?

wheelbarrow-324389_960_720It’s Rochester, so who knows what the weather will do but we’re thinking warmer temperatures are here to stay.  It’s time to start thinking spring!  The calendar says the first day of spring is tomorrow so it must be true!  Here are some great ways you can get your yard ready for spring and your home ready to shine.

Beware of Potholes

Now that the snow has melted, we can really start to see the damage that’s been done to our roads during the winter.  You’ll want to be extra mindful of potholes, but Monroe County is already working to get things repaired.

The Democrat and Chronicle has started a page to help people in the Greater Rochester area track potholes; take a look and see where the significant problems are. The list is just getting started this season and they could use your help.

Is there a pothole near you that didn’t make the list?  Report it!  Monroe County has an easy form to fill out, so that any issues can be resolved ASAP.

Spruce Up the Inside

welly-861885_960_720 Take a look around; what needs to be done?  A fresh house always feels great in the spring!  We love The Complete Guide to Imperfect Homemaking’s spring cleaning list!  Feel like your house is too much to tackle?  Angie’s List can hook you up.  Check out their list of cleaning services available right here in our area.  Look at the reviews.  Give one a call, and start your spring off right!!

Spring into Action on the Outside

shrubAn article from Good Housekeeping has some great tips:

  1.  Survey the damage to find the dead and bare spots of your lawn
  2. Tidy up debris and consider a compost pile
  3. Get your lawn mower serviced
  4. Prune your plants with this great guide

Spring brings an active market and if you are thinking of making a move this is the best time ever! Interest rates are still at historic lows!  Contact us today!

How To Beat the Winter Blues

February 20, 2016 by Sharon Kunkel

Happy weekend to our Pittsford friends!

Or maybe with all this cold & snow, you aren’t feeling to cheerful today?  We’re starting to hit the point where it feels like winter has been a roller coaster and it looks like another polar vortex is headed our way. Winter in our neck of the woods can certainly feel like a long season, so we’ve updated our guide on How to Beat the WinterBlues. #itsreal

Eat Happy!

Why not make grocery shopping a little more exciting!?  Hit up our local Wegmans store (we’ve got one of the best in the world, right here in Pittsford!) and pick up a few fruits or veggie’s you’ve never tried?  Stop in the candy aisle and grab that expensive bar of dark chocolate; treat yourself!!

Let the Sunshine In

Real Simple magazine has 8 scientifically proven ideas that just might help.  Here’s are favorite 3:

Turn on the tunes. In a 2013 study, researchers showed that listening to upbeat or cheery music significantly improved participant’s mood in both the short and long term.

Make your environment brighter. When your body is craving more daylight, sitting next to an artificial light—also called a light box—for 30 minutes per day can be as effective as antidepressant medication. Opening blinds and curtains, trimming back tree branches, and sitting closer to windows can also help provide an extra dose of sunshine.

Plan a vacation. Longing for sunnier days at the beach? Research shows that the simple act of planning a vacation causes a significant increase in overall happiness.

Be sure to read the rest of the article to get some great tips.

Get Help

The winter blues are a pretty common phenomenon, but when the blues get carried away, people find themselves facing Seasonal Affective Disorder (or SAD).  This less-common condition can lead to significant episodes of depression.  It is more than just a seasonal funk, it is a real disease & can be treated.  For more information on SAD, read this helpful article from the Mayo Clinic and talk to a health care professional.

Other Tips:

There are lots of other small changes you can make, to help you get through these last few weeks of winter.  Consider:

-Wearing brighter clothes
-Get a jump start on spring cleaning
-Volunteer; giving back is a great thing to take the focus off the weather!  Here’s a great resource for finding service opportunities here in Pittsford.

The Spring Market is already here and that’s something to get excited about.  Get a head start if you are thinking of buying or selling a home!  Chris Feck is Pittsford’s Realtor; she would love to help you!

The Unofficial Guide to Superbowl 50 in Pittsford NY

January 29, 2016 by Sharon Kunkel

The Superbowl is just around the corner, in fact it’s next weekend.  Since you won’t have to coach from the couch this Sunday, we thought you might have a little bit of time to plan your very own adventure.  Please enjoy our Unofficial Guide to Superbowl 50 in Pittsford NY.

Denver Broncos vs. Carolina Panthers

We believe that it’s important to begin at the beginning and actually know who the teams are.  And, equally important is knowing the team colors if you plan on accessorizing at all, which ultimately might determine who you root for.  The NFL has it’s own official guide to the matchup, which apparently makes ours “unofficial” but that hasn’t stopped us yet.  They do have a great section on how the teams compare and stats and all of that good stuff as well as what’s cookin for the half time show.  Again, we think choosing by color or letting the animals decide who you root for are also valid options.  Follow our Facebook page, to find out which animals are choosing this year and what they chose.

Super Bowl Worthy Snacks

Many of you who will be watching at home or at a friends, will default to pizza and nachos.  People, this year is the 50th anniversary of the Superbowl, so it’s time to up your snack game.  Here are some of our favorite choices from Delish.com

Be sure to visit the website for even more delicious and easy recipes.

Out and About Superbowl:

You may decide to let someone else make the appetizers for you and deal with your beverages, after all, you’ll need to focus your energy on the game  and/or following the football squares.   Pittsford has some great choices to watch the game:

Pet Safety and Indoor Games for Pets in the Winter

January 14, 2016 by Sharon Kunkel

The weather outside is frightful.    It’s important to stay on top of weather conditions not only for yourself, but for your four legged friends as well.  We’ve updated our guide from last year. Here are some safetytips we found from the Humane Society for pets in the winter.

dog faceKeep pets indoors

A brief walk won’t hurt, but back inside you go, right after.

Take precautions if your pet spends a lot of time outside

Make sure the shelter you provide is up to the  standards that will keep your pet safe

Help neighborhood outdoor cats

Grab some friends and consider a community project of building a temporary shelter.

Give your pets plenty of food and water

Keeping warm actually depletes your pet of energy.  Make sure they are well fed and hydrated.

Be careful with cats, wildlife and cars

Apparently the warm engine is too good to resist some times.

paw-prints-583794_960_720Protect paws from salt

Make sure you wipe down your pets paws to avoid irritation of your pets feet and mouth.

Avoid antifreeze poisoning

Make sure all chemicals are out of reach and wipe up any spills ASAP.  The antifreeze has a tempting taste and we don’t want your pet to suffer.

dog-743909_960_720Speak out if you see a pet left in the cold

Documentation is important.  Be as specific as you can and report your findings to your local animal control agency.

For all the details including the care of horses and other animals, be sure to read the entire article.

If you do have to stay indoors you can still keep active with these great indoor activities from Petfinder:

 Laser pointer:

Dog and cats both enjoy this diversion and the pointers are not that expensive.

Searching game:

Hide treats or favorite (i.e. smelly) toys around the house, then tell your dog to find them. (Find out how to train your dog to search for it in this video.)

Chasing bubbles:

soap-bubble-824564_960_720A lot of dogs (and cats too!) love chomping on bubbles. (Here’s a great video) Set up near a fan for extra fun — just be sure to use pet-friendly bubbles (available in many pet-supply stores).

Be sure to read the rest of the article for even more fun ideas.

The weather outside may be frightful, but you can still have fun and be safe this winter.  If you’re looking for more room 4 your four legged friends to roam, indoors or out, contact us today and we’ll partner with our trusted mortgage professional Mike Monile to help you find the perfect shelter!
