On Monday, August 21st, Rochester will be one of many cities nationwide to witness a solar eclipse that will stretch from the Pacific to the Atlantic for the first time since 1918, according
to NASA. The eclipse will stretch from 1:14 pm until 3:52 pm, reaching its maximum phase at 2:35 pm. Sure, getting a glimpse of the eclipse can be as simple as looking out the nearest window. But why not use it as an excuse to get the kids out of the house? There are multiple viewing events taking place this Monday that are fun and educational for the whole family.
Total Eclipse of The Farm: Lollypop Farm, located in Fairport, NY, is holding a viewing event with a fun-loving twist. If you have a love of nature and all of its furry friends, then this is the event for you. From 12:30 pm – 4:00 pm, locals can grab a blanket and a chair and watch the eclipse while surrounded by the farm’s friendly goats. The Lollypop Farm gift shop is providing safety glasses for $2. Refreshments will be provided along with a perfect view. You can follow the event on Facebook.
Rochester Museum & Science Center: Allergic to animals? Perhaps the RMSC Eclipse Day event is the best fit for you and your family. All viewers can stop by the Strasenburgh Planetarium from 12 pm-4 pm. Viewers can meet with volunteers who specialize in astronomy and physics to learn about the eclipse. Prior to the eclipse, the museum is also showing a Solar Eclipse Star Show. Viewers will learn about what makes an eclipse happen, what to watch for, and where to go to see it in totality. You will also get a preview of April 8, 2024, when Rochester gets its first total solar eclipse since 1925. The museum will also have protective eyewear available for $2.
If you are thinking about viewing the eclipse from the comfort of your own backyard, you do not have to worry about scrambling to find eyewear for your family. There are 11 libraries throughout Rochester that will pass out free ‘eclipse glasses’ on the day of the big event. It doesn’t matter if you’re watching from your home or from a pasture of animals; you are not going to want to miss this historical event!
