Winter in Pittsford can be a lot of fun; ice skating & skiing at Mendon Ponds, pretty winter landscapes around town, and hey, do you wanna build a snowman? It’s a great time of year to enjoy hot chocolate, warm soups & deliciously easy crock pot meals. Chilly winter weather is the perfect excuse to cuddle up for afternoon nap or cozying up with someone special in front of a roaring fire.
It is fortunate that here in Pittsford we are able to enjoy all four seasons; including winter! But, Jack Frost often brings us more than we bargained for! Winter can be a hard season on your house; with heaps of snow and subzero temperatures (anyone remember the Polar Vortex of last winter!?), you want to make sure your home & family are protected!
Raise the Roof
You really want to pay close attention to your roof during the winter; many winter-related home issues start from the top! During heavy snowfalls, the weight of all that accumulation can be too much for your roof’s structure. A roof rake can help you keep the snow from building up too much!
You also want to be cautious of ice dams on your roof…. Take a look at other homes on your street. Do they have a blanket of snow on the roof, while your’s is all melted?? If your roof is getting too warm, and it’s possible that melted snow will refreeze. This can cause a variety of problems including leaks, ceiling & wall damage in your home. Keeping your attic space cold is key! Proper insulation will keep your heat where you want it, and soffit vents will keep the air flowing up there! Icicles are another key indication that ice dams might be a problem for your home.
Keep Your Kids Safe
The American Academy of Pediatrics has some great rules of thumb & tips for making sure your children stay safe this winter. Let’s face it, most kids love playing in the snow! But when is it too cold to play? There are no hard & fast rules when it comes to safe temperatures, so AAP recommends using common sense & caution when you let children play out in cold conditions:
- The younger the child? The shorter the trip outside! Little bodies can’t hold their heat as well as older ones!
- The colder the weather? The shorter the trip outside! Don’t forget to factor in that windchill!
- And don’t forget to bundle up! Kids should wear one more layer that you would put on an adult in similar conditions!!
Keep Your Furry Kids Safe
Many dogs love to play in the snow too!! And too often a pet will get left out in the cold during the winter. Protect your buddies & bring them in out of chilly weather. The folks at Lollypop Farm had a great message for us earlier this week; if it’s too cold for us, it is too cold for our pets! And please call authorities if you see neglected pups out for too long!
