Get in Gear and Grab Your Bike Rochester!

August 21, 2015 by Sharon Kunkel

Last week we brought you trampolines, this week we bring you trains, planes and automobiles…all excellent modes of transportation.  Actually, we have one more for you to consider this summer:  Behold the bicycle!  Since the weather is cooperating for the most part, cycling is a great way to soak up the season.  Here’s what’s new:

Bicycle Lanes

Since the summer of 2011, the City has added over 45 lane miles and more are on the way.  As stated on the City’s Bike Rochester page, bicycling benefits include:

Bicycling Helps the Local Economy

  • Almost 20 percent of the average American family’s budget is spent on transportation. Thus, more pedal power, and less fuel consumption, can result in real savings for Rochester’s families.
  • Increased disposable income can result in increased spending in the local marketplace, which would boost the local economy.
  • Improving bicycling conditions is a cost-effective way of optimizing existing public infrastructure.

Bicycling Communities are Healthier Communities

  • Adding bicycling to the daily routine helps us stay healthier; 60% of Americans are overweight or obese, and bicycling is a great solution to the problem.
  • According to the Centers for Disease Control, 30 minutes of moderate exercise (like bicycling), five days a week, can reduce the risks for illnesses such as high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis and depression.
  • Bicycle trips create zero emissions, contributing to better air quality for the Rochester region (and cleaner air for all of us to breathe)

Bicycling Communities are Strong Communities

  • Improved bicycling conditions provides mobility for people who do not have cars, thereby increasing access to jobs, education, and health care.
  • Cities that promote bicycling tend to retain youth, attract young families, and increase social capital.
  • Improved bicycling conditions add to the vitality and quality of life of the community and provide access to recreational destinations across the region.
  • Better bicycling facilities provide access to public transit, thereby increasing transportation options.
Be sure to visit the page and find out what exciting options are coming including bike boxes and cycle tracks.

Hart’s Local Grocers

Many area businesses are supporting the effort.  Hart’s Local Grocers installed the city’s first bike corral and offered a discount in May to those that came in with a helmet.  They also received a Community Recognition Award for promoting bicycling and bicycling safety.

Rochester Group Tours on Bikes

Now let’s say you like the idea of getting on a bicycle; you just think it would be more fun with friends.  In fact, you think it would be awesome if you could actually take the show on the road and actually party with your friends as you go!  Fear not!  Your time has come.

Rochester Pedal Pub

Rent the PedalPub® by the hour for your next party, parade, or any event where fun is on the menu!

Great Ideas to Beat Summer Boredom

July 21, 2015 by Sharon Kunkel

ored this summer?  Not on our watch!  Here are some great ideas that are sure to get anyone off the couch and into action.

The Democrat and Chronicle put a list together of  70 great ideas and here are some of our favorites:

water-fight-442257_640 KIDSdays from 4 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday in July and August at Eastview Mall, Victor. Enjoy free carousel rides all day, plus crafts, face painting, balloon artistry and bounce activities in the Main Court. This is a free event.

Kids Eat Free, area restaurants. Spare yourself the dirty dishes and save a few bucks on a night out with the kids. Peruse this list to find local eateries where kids dine for free, or on the cheap. Nights and prices may vary by location, so be sure to call to confirm. Get info at juliesfreebies.com/free-food-restaurants/kids-eat-free

Make a splash! Cool down this summer at an area splash pad. Pack the sunscreen, plus a picnic lunch and try the ones at  the First Responders’ Park in Webster, Pineway Ponds in Spencerport on for size and the new ones that just opened.  This is a free activity.

Walnut Hill Carriage Driving Competition. Aug. 5-9, Pittsford. Claim your spot as the Sunday Morning Pleasure Ride of fanciful carriages parades through Mendon Ponds Park at 9 a.m. Aug. 9.  (It’s right in our own back yard!)

Want more ideas?  Read the rest of the article!

Honestly, it wouldn’t be summer if we didn’t try our hands at some crafty projects.  Pinterest was our go to this time and our goal was to choose something we could make because, well, we’re not really crafty!

 Balloon Rockets

It’s a craft and a science lesson all in one and it doesn’t require that many materials.

What you need:

  • Piece of yarn (cut to about 6 feet)
  • Balloon
  • 2 Chairs
  • Drinking straw
  • Tape
  • Scissors

This activity  from DiscoverExploreLearn.com was one of 33 found on Buzzfeed’s list and all of them are awesome.

Jellyfish

We could not resist this one, especially since it requires using lids from a coffee shop or convenient store and we thought collecting those  would be an adventure too.

The perfect summer decor? Homemade sea creatures that flutter in the breeze.

  • Collect materials for the tentacles: we used curling ribbon, a few strips of bubble wrap with 1/2-inch-wide bubbles, a bath pouf (cut open and unwound), and heavy-duty paper towels cut into spirals. Our tentacles are 12 to 18 inches long.
  • Gather the tentacles at one end and thread them up through the hole of a plastic dome drink lid (from a coffee shop or convenience store). Tape the ends around the outside of the lid with clear tape.

  • Tape a colorful paper cupcake liner over the top of the dome.
  • Cover the lid with three layers of plastic wrap, one sheet at a time, tucking the excess wrap under the bottom edge of the lid.
  • Add adhesive-backed pearls to the outer edge of the lid.
  • Knot the end of a length of elastic cord and tape it to the top of the lid. Hang the jellyfish on a porch or by a breezy window.

Bandana Bracelets

We thought these would be great because they’re easy to make, would appeal to kids of all ages, and they don’t require sewing.  Bonus, this craft comes with step by step tutorials from Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom.

There’s so much to do to soak in summer fun.  Perhaps a move is your next adventure!  Contact us today!  We can help!

Hey Pittsford Friends!

Jack Frost has really been piling on the snow lately!  And with more coming this winter, why not take some time to enjoy it!?  What better way than to get out and go sledding?  Sledding is the perfect way to spend a snowy day, whether you’re looking for something for the whole family, or a fun spot for a date!  And there are lots of opportunities to sled right here in Pittsford!

The most popular sledding spot in Pittsford is hands-down Powder Mills Park.  Here you’ll find several designated sledding areas; one spot even has a tow rope for those who don’t want to make the long walk up the hill!  Check out this review of sledding at the park for more information on the hills!

Just a couple safety tips for those hitting the hills:

  • Check the hill!  Make sure there are no trees or rocks, or standing water BEFORE you start heading down!!
  • Be aware of others around you!
  • Dress or success!  Warm clothes; waterproof items are a plus!!

Weekend What to Do: White Christmas

December 12, 2013 by Katie Dahl

Are you dreaming of a white Christmas this year!?

My mom’s favorite holiday movie is, hands-down, White Christmas.  She sits down the day after Thanksgiving every year to watch Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemarry Clooney & Vera Ellen belting and crooning about how wonderful a White Christmas would be.  And, confession: I get choked up every single time I watch the end of it.  It is truly a Christmas-must at my house!

White Christmas tells the story of two army veterans who’ve become popular stage performers.  Joined by a sister-double-act, they travel to Vermont to put on a Christmas show at a ski resort.  But when they get to Vermont, they find green grass & warm temperatures- no snow!  And no customers!  How will they save the Inn, now run by their former military commander?

Whether you’re a White Christmas fan, or you’ve never seen it, you don’t want to miss Pittsford High School’s live presentation of the musical this weekend!  They will be giving three performances; Friday at 7:30 and Saturday at 2:00 & 7:30.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door (students, seniors & veterans $12)
Pittsford Mendon High School.
