Put Your Lawn to the Test
An easy step that many homeowners skip is testing the Ph level of your lawn. There are several ways to go about checking the acidity or alkalinity of your yard. Your favorite local garden store (we love Pittsford Tree and Landscape) will have a few different testing kits. Most experts agree that a soil level of 6.5-7 is ideal for growing grass; depending on your lawn, you may need to up the acidity or the base level of your soil. Here are some great tips on helping your yard achieve an ideal Ph level.
De-thatch & Aerate
Over the winter, your lawn has gone dormant, and it probably isn’t looking very pretty. Last year, your grass grew and sloughed off old, dead pieces. All this dead debris builds up, and creates a hard layer called thatch. Thatch doesn’t allow the air, water & other good stuff reach tender new grasses, and is a sure-fire way to get a patchy yard. Rake all that thatch away with a thatching rake, or even just an old gravel rake. The DIY network can help you become a de-thatching pro, but please start early, you don’t want to de-thatch once your spring lawn really starts growing!!
You’ll also want to give your yard it’s best chance by making sure enough oxygen is reaching grass roots! The DIY folks have some more great tips for you!
Sod or Seed
Once you’ve got your yard prepped, it’s time to decide how you want to want to get that beautiful new grass growing! Certainly rolling out some sod is the fastest way to get a gorgeous yard; you’ll have a blanket of grass instantly. However, quick lawn solutions don’t necessarily come cheap! Sod or seed? Here’s some more information to help you decide.
You can save yourself some money by seeding your yard. Using grass seed is a great way to reinforce a sparse lawn, without having to start fresh. Grass seed requires more patience & TLC, but at about a dollar per 1,000 feet, you could save yourself several hundred dollars (more for large yards!) by planting grass seed this spring.
Dinner & a Drink
Once you’ve got your sod or seed in, it’s time to take care of your yard! Depending on what path you’ve chosen, you’ll want to make sure you water your lawn appropriately. Fertilizer will also help keep your grass green & looking it’s best! Give it a good healthy meal of nutrient rich fertilizer, and keep it from getting thirsty with plenty of water! Especially after first planting grass seed, this step is essential!!!
