One thing is for certain, at the start of an NFL season, everyone has the same record at 0 – 0. With exactly one game played so far – KC upsetting the Patriots at home – nobody is totally counted out. Where we go from here is anyone’s guess, but the NFL sure has a ton of analysts offering up educated guesses! Let the NFL Season 2017 begin!
One thing to keep in mind is that the NFL seems to do a good job of having some perennial powerhouses – and there is a lot of evidence that this is a positive as far as keeping fan interest high – while at the same time always having some surprise teams in the mix. People tend to naturally think of the Patriots’ dominance over the past fifteen years, and rightly so, but the truth of the matter is that the New England Patriots start the 2017-18 season trying to become only the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since it was done in 2004 and 2005 by the…New England Patriots. And with a fourth quarter collapse at home already by the reigning Super Bowl kings, that path seems as difficult as ever.
But in between that repeat in 2004 and 2005 and the new season kicking off, there have been no fewer than eight different Super Bowl champs and five others who at least represented as their conference champion. With free agency and the draft’s ever-growing importance, the NFL has devised a system where you can really turn your fortunes around quite quickly. Of the Top 10 turnaround seasons in the history of the league, half of them have been in the 21st century, the most recent being the 2013 Kansas City Chiefs who went from 2 – 14 to 11 – 5 in one year.
But, regrettably, our beloved Buffalo Bills have been caught in a long quagmire ever since the Machine Gun Kelly and Bruce Smith-led teams hung up their cleats. The Bills now own the dubious streak of longest playoff-appearance drought (17 years) and it’s been 21 years since the Bills won a playoff game (only the Bengals and Lions have gone longer without a sip of playoff victory). Hard to believe for those of us who lived through the high piles of wins under the formidable Marv Levy-coached teams in the early and mid-1990s. But with a new regime in place, good things will be coming in a couple more years. There was evidence of steps forward at the Bills training camp held in Pittsford this summer.
There are many fine venues in the area to enjoy the gridiron action! Fly the colors of your favorite team, regardless of their wins and losses, and get ready for that annual autumn American love-fest with the National Football League!
