Seeing movies in the theater is an experience that millions of people love, and watching a cinematic gem outdoors on a beautiful summer evening (thinking positive – rain, rain stay away) is another great way to enjoy a film.
The Town of Pittsford is making that possible with three family-friendly films to watch under the summer stars. It is a fantastic way to introduce the young ones to the big screen, bond with the family, and enjoy some outdoor air all at the same time! All three offerings are from 2016, so if they were missed during their respective theater runs, they’re certainly not outdated!
An important note for those who have experienced the series in previous years is that there is a change in venue for the this year. Due to some field work being done at the previous site of the series, the films will be screened this season at Sutherland High School at 55 Sutherland Street. The first of the three movies will be on July 20th, the next will be two weeks later on August 3rd, and the final one will be on August 17th – all Thursdays. The films all begin screening at dark. Because it’s the summer and the start of nightfall coincides with the bedtimes of the younger viewers, it may be wise to try to get a little nap time for the munchkins so they can stay up and enjoy the movie. On second thought, it may be a good thing for Mom, Dad, Grandma, and Grandpa, too!
On July 20th, the late-2016 movie Trolls will launch the series. Trolls is from the hit-makers at Dreamworks (Shrek, How To Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda). It follows the happy-go-lucky Trolls and their clash with the pessimistic Bergens. There are good messages for the children, and the star-studded voice cast includes Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Zooey Deschanel, James Corden, Jeffrey Tambor plus a host of others. As a bonus, Timberlake produced the soundtrack that includes original tunes from him, Ariana Grande, Anna Kendrick and Gwen Stefani. And of course, there’s the Trolls themselves which many of us over a certain age will remember fondly as one the favorite kitsch objects from yesteryear.
On August 3rd, it’s Disney’s Moana the mythical story set in Ancient Polynesia, giving it the Hawaiian flair modern audiences will recognize. Stricken by a spell cast by the Demigod Maui, Moana, the precocious daughter of one of the island’s chieftains, goes on an unforgettable oceanic adventure to return serenity to the island. The voice cast includes Auli’i Cravalho in the title role, as well as Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Rachel House, Jermaine Clement, and Nicole Scherzinger.
The final film on August 17th will be Sing from the Illumination Company. In a world filled with animal-people, a wheeling-dealing theater owner launches a singing contest in an effort to salvage his playhouse. The finalists in the super-competition have their lives changed forever. The all-star cast is headed by Reese Witherspoon, Matthew McConaughey, Seth MacFarlane, and Scarlett Johannesen.
Bring your blankets and chairs, there will be popcorn and soft drinks available, and enjoy some great entertainment under the skies of Pittsford!
